HARPER JR. George Harper was born in Savannah, Georgia. He credits his mother as the person that was responsible for his interest in music. His first musical instrument was clarinet, within two years he took up tenor saxophone. His first gig was a blues program in Nashville, for which he got paid $3. As his family moved around the south George continued to develop his jazz techniques. He has been influenced by such jazz greats as John Payton and Joe Kennedy. George has performed with The Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Ray Charles, Curtis Fuller and Herbie Hancock to mention just a few. He has lead the George Harper Ensemble and performed at various schools in the Las Angeles Unified District. The program featured jazz music from Dixieland to more contemporary. George was also featured by The National Grammy Concert Series for Children as “The George Harper Saxophone Quartet”. This program featured music and composers of various music styles from Classical to Jazz.
